Most doctors explain blood sugar levels to their patients and how insulin treatment works to manage blood sugar. But insulin is only half of the equation.
What most doctors don’t explain is the crucial role played by leptin. They don’t explain how leptin resistance is known to bring on full-blown diabetes, and that leptin is controlled by diet and physical activity, not medication.
What follows is the information your healthcare team should tell you, and what you MUST know if you want to reverse your condition and restore good health.
Leptin is the hormone that helps us regulate our appetite and body weight. It’s stored in our fat cells and signals hunger and when to stop eating. It also signals to the brain what needs to be done with the energy available.
Lab studies by Jeffrey M. Friedman and Douglas Coleman discovered leptin and its purpose in the body. Their groundbreaking studies in the early 1990’s showed that mice without leptin grow obese. When people become resistant to leptin the same thing happens. Without leptin our brain never gets the signal to stop eating. The researchers also discovered that mice injected with leptin were more active and lost weight.
Interestingly, Friedman observed that overweight people have elevated levels of leptin and concluded that the body must have an adverse reaction to obesity. As he later discovered, the adverse reaction is a resistance to leptin. The research team also figured out that leptin is crucial when it comes to the accuracy of insulin signaling and insulin resistance.
The Friedman and Coleman discoveries lead to the conclusion that the primary role of insulin is to store the extra energy (glycogen) for later consumption. In other words, the ability insulin has to lower blood sugar is simply a result of the body’s natural energy storage process.
This information is a game changer. What it shows is that diabetes is a malfunction in the leptin and insulin signaling system. This is why the common treatment for diabetes is completely WRONG!
The predominant medical treatment focuses on artificially maintaining blood sugar levels. This doesn’t work and is potentially leathal. Managing blood sugar levels artificially, for an extended period of time, simply does not address the body’s signaling malfunction.
Here’s the reality. The only way to restore proper leptin and insulin signaling is through a healthy diet, physical activity, and weight-loss. This is how you reverse your disease and restore good health.
Many people with type 2 diabetes can control their blood glucose by following a healthy meal plan and a program of regular physical activity, losing excess weight, and taking medications. Medications for each individual with diabetes will often change during the course of the disease.
In other words, once you get your diet, exercise and weight under control, in most cases you’ll no longer need medication.
This begs an important question. If the public health departments of the United States government know that a simple change in lifestyle can reverse type 2 diabetes, why aren’t they out in force educating the population?
