I wanted to like smoothies more. I know I need the extra boost of protein and they’re a great way to hide greens if you’re not getting enough. But I had an issue that every protein powder I tried I hated. I shelled out tons of money for the “fancy” protein. I tried chocolate and vanilla and unflavored. Still, there was that flavor – that taste that wasn’t a taste and yet affected everything.
I kind of gave up and tried to get the extra protein in other ways. My weight loss stalls when I don’t get enough protein and it helps keep me fuller longer. I would eat two cans of tuna or four eggs or a big chicken breast in addition to my meals. And while that’s fine and healthy and a good idea, it can get kind of boring. And cooking a chicken breast while you stand in the kitchen shaking after a hard WOD just isn’t as quick or effective as a great protein smoothie.
So I started my search again and it just so happened that one of the women I Crossfit with – one of the owner/coach’s wives – started telling me about a product called Isagenix IsoPure*. They have a whole line of health products: all kinds of cleanses, protein powder, energy bars, etc. But what got my attention was that the product was 1) 100% grass-fed and organic with NO fillers, 18 g of protein per scoop and only 120 calories; 2) undernatured which means it wasn’t brought to the high-temperature required for “pasteurization” which can damage a lot of the nutrients; and 3) she swore it didn’t taste like ass.
I bought a tub of the unflavored and picked it up at the gym on Monday. I came home excited to come up with a delicious smoothie recipe to try it. I concocted the following recipe, took a sip, and it tasted like a milkshake! There was no funny “protein powder” taste, it was smooth, and there was no aftertaste. Yay! This particular recipe tastes like a peanut butter cup without the sugar or the peanut butter. Enjoy!
